Visiting for Rewards
Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq(a) narrates: “Those who perform the ziyārah of al-Ḥusayn(a) with the intention of receiving rewards from Allāh and without the intention of showing off or being seen by others will have their sins purified the way the water purifies the clothes.”
Ḥārūn b. Khārijah narrates: I asked Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq(a), “May I be sacrificed for You! What is the reward for those who perform the ziyārah of the grave of al-Ḥusayn(a) whilst having maʿrifah, seeking nearness to Allāh and hoping for the blessings of the hereafter?”
Imām(a) replied, “O Ḥārūn! I swear by Allāh that Allāh will forgive all of the past and future sins of those who perform the ziyārah of the grave of al-Ḥusayn(a) whilst having maʿrifah seeking nearness to Allāh, and hoping for the blessings of the Hereafter.” Then Imām(a) added three times, “Did I not swear by Allāh before you?”
ʿAbd Allāh b. Maymūn al-Qaddāḥ narrates: I asked Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq(a), “What is the reward for those who perform the ziyārah of the grave of al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī(a) whilst knowing his rights and without being prideful or arrogant?”
Imām(a) replied, “One thousand accepted Ḥajj and one thousand accepted ʿUmrah will be recorded for them. And even if they are amongst the wretched, they will be recorded amongst the joyous and will be continuously encompassed in the mercy of Allāh.”
Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq(a) narrates: “Jabrāʾīl, Mikaʾīl and Israfʾīl will accompany those who perform the ziyārah of the grave of al-Ḥusayn(a) whilst seeking the nearness of Allāh until they return to their homes.”
ʿAbd Allāh b. Maskān narrates: I saw Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq(a) when a group of people from Khorasan came to visit him. They asked him about the rewards of performing the ziyārah of the grave of al-Ḥusayn(a). Imām(a) said, “My father narrated to me that my grandfather used to say, ‘Allāh will erase the sins of those who perform the ziyārah of al-Ḥusayn(a) with the intention of gaining the pleasure of Allāh. They will be sinless like a newborn baby. Angels will accompany them on their way to ziyārah. The angels will spread their wings over them until they return to their families. Angels will seek forgiveness for them from their Lord and cry out to them, “You have been blessed and blessed is the one whose ziyārah you have come to perform.’ The visitors will be encompassed by the mercy from the heavens and their families will be protected for them.”
Mu’ammar narrates: I heard Zayd b. ʿAlī say, “Allāh will forgive the sins of those who perform the ziyārah of the grave of Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī(a) whilst seeking nothing but the pleasure of Allāh even if their sins are as great as the scum found in the sea. Therefore you should perform ziyārah as much as you can so that Allāh may forgive your sins.”
Imām Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq(a) narrates: “Those who perform the ziyārah of the grave of al-Ḥusayn(a) for the sake of Allāh and in the way of Allāh will be free from the hellfire. They will be safe on the Day of the Great Terror. They will not ask Allāh for anything in this world or the hereafter that Allāh will not grant for them.”
